About Us

One of Treasury’s roles is to advise Ministers of the New Zealand Government on their ownership interest in a wide variety of companies and entities. As part of this role, the Governance and Appointments team assists Ministers to identify and appoint directors and board members to oversee the management of those organisations.

Board appointments are one of the most important ways Ministers can influence the performance and strategic direction of Crown entities and companies. The expectation is that these appointments result in high performing and effective boards through diversity of membership. This means ensuring that the mix of skills, knowledge, and experience includes factors such as cultural capability and insight, gender diversity, and diversity of thought.

There are approximately 250 governance positions on boards across the companies and entities monitored by the Treasury, comprising State-owned enterprises, other Crown entity companies and statutory entities.

Every year, the terms of approximately one third of all board members end and are considered by Ministers, assisted by advice provided by the Treasury. In many cases incumbent directors will be reappointed. However, Ministers will generally make between 40 to 60 new appointments each year.
